萩の新鮮な名物　夏みかん fresh specialty "Summer orange"

かつて城下町だった萩市では、

武家屋敷の土塀から夏みかんの木が顔をのぞかせているという情緒ある風景をよく目にします。
そして、５月には萩の町中が新鮮で甘い香りに包まれます。

In Hagi city, which was once a castle town, you can often see the emotional views that summer orange trees appear from Japanese samurai house.
And in May, the whole town is covered with a fresh and sweet smell.

夏みかんの原樹は江戸時代中期に萩市の隣の長門市で見つかりました。
それ以来、萩の城下ではゆずの代用としてたくさんの夏みかんが生産されました。
１８６３年に藩主が萩市から山口市に移ったことにより夏みかん産業は衰退しましたが、人々は夏みかんの種をまいたり、苗木を接木したりして、再び萩の町全体に夏みかん畑を広げたのです。

The original tree of summer orange was found in Nagato city (next to Hagi city) in the middle of Edo period.
Since then, many summer oranges have been produced as substitutes for yuzu (like a Japanese orange).
In 1863, the summer orange industry declined because the lord moved to Yamaguchi city from Hagi city then.
However people worked hardly, and spread the field of summer oranges again.

また、萩夏みかんセンターでは夏みかんの加工商品の開発を行っています。
たとえば、夏みかんピール、マーマレード、みかんゼリーなどが人気です。
さらに萩市内のお店では、夏みかんアイスに加工されて販売されています。
ぜひ夏みかんアイスを味わいながら萩の町を満喫してください！

毎年収穫を迎える５月には、かんきつ公園で「夏みかん祭り」も開催されます。夏みかんづくしのイベントにぜひお越しください！

Also, people are trying to make processed products.
For example, summer orange peel, marmalade, orange jelly, etc. are popular.
In addition, summer oranges are processed into ice cream and sold at the store in Hagi city.

In May, the year of harvest, the “Summer Orange Festival” is held at Kankitsu Park.
