乙女峠「マリア聖堂」& 「津和野カトリック教会」 St. Mary Church & Tsuwano Catholic Church

江戸の町並みを残す津和野町には、キリスト教に関する歴史があります。

幕末から明治、日本が鎖国から開国に舵を切る時期に、
多くのクリスチャンが流罪になりました。
津和野はその流刑地の一つで、１５３名のクリスチャンが送られ、
そこで拷問を受けました。

第二次大戦後、ネーベル神父はその殉教者たちを想い、
乙女峠に記念聖堂を建てて、
その場所が祈りにふさわしい場所になるよう尽力したそうです。

A historic town ‘Tsuwano’ has a history about Christianity.
At the latter half of 19c century
(the age changing from national isolation to opening the country),
believing christianity was illegal, 
and many christians were sent to isolated place and tortured.
Tsuwano was one of the place (153 believers were sent)

After WWⅡ, a Father decided to build a memorial church for the martyrs,
wishing it would be a appropriate place for praying.

当時、どういうことが起こったのか、私達はマリア聖堂に訪れて、
その歴史を知ることができます。

また、津和野カトリック教会では、ステンドグラスとともに、
畳の教会を見ることができます。
今では珍しくなった畳の教会を見ることで、
日本という異国にキリスト教が入ってきた歴史の流れを感じることができます。

悲しい歴史ですが、宗教や個人の信仰を考える上で、非常に勉強になる施設です。

At Tsuwano Catholic Church, you’ll see not only stained grass but also tatami mat.
It is unique that there is a tatami in a church.
You will see the process that Christianity came to localize in Japan.

You’ll know a sad history there,
but it is a good place to learn the history of religion or belief.
