益田にゆかりのある文化人といえば、水墨画の巨匠・雪舟と、歌聖・柿本人麻呂がいます。
日本の水墨画を大成させた雪舟にまつわる益田の施設が、ここ医光寺と雪舟の郷記念館。

 Masuda city is the city associated with two big cultural men, Sesshu who is the master of painting in Chinese ink and Hitomaro who is the god of Japanese poem.
You can touch and feel Sesshu at this 'Ikoji temple and ’Sesshu memorial museum’ in Masuda.

医光寺には雪舟が作った庭園があり、国史蹟および名勝に指定されています。

日本の美術史に残る大人物・雪舟が益田にいたことは不思議な気持ちがします。
雪舟の水墨画は、医光寺の近くの雪舟の郷記念館でも見ることができるので、
庭園を見た後は、是非、記念館に起こしください。

At Ikoji temple, you can see the garden produced by Sesshu.
He was not only the greatest master of the painting in Chinese ink, but the great garden artists at that time.
He produced an authentic Japanese garden when he stayed at Masuda.
He expressed some artistic design and hints in the garden, but some of them are too difficult to understand for us(teenagers).

So, we recommend you to visit Sesshu memorial museum.
You can see some drawings by Sesshu there.
You’ll see the precious paintings which you can’t see even at the big museum or temple in Kyoto!
